Our Ensembles

Our men's group!  This group meets during lunch on Monday and Wednesday in 3-2.  Be ready to hear some fun and new sounds: Pop, hip hop, oldies, indie, acoustic, acappella.  This group is open to any RHS male that would like to sing.   Bring your lunch.

A large group of auditioned female and male singers in grades nine through twelve.  This group has performed in the most prestigious halls in the U.S. - Carnegie Hall, (NYC) 3x Orchestra Hall, (Chicago) the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C) 2x  and Disney Hall (L.A.) 5x. Concert Choir consistently receives  superiors at festivals. Once you join, you have 50 instant friends!

A select group of auditioned female singers in grades nine through twelve.  Vocal Ensemble also travels to several festivals a year and earns superiors at their festivals and performances.  The girls earned 3 perfect scores of 100 in 2013 and 2 more in 2014!

A small select group of singers in grades nine through twelve.  This group has received numerous awards, including the 2005 prestigious Downbeat Award for Outstanding High School Vocal Jazz group in the U.S. and 1st runner-up in 2010.  Singers must have advanced aural skills as well as music experience.  In addition to jazz, acappella, pop and contemporary music, the group also performs as a chamber group and will be representing Royal at festivals.

About Our Program

The RHS Choirs have a long history of excellence and success.  The students and director take great pride in creating an inspiring performance; whether it be classical, jazz or popular music.  Students at RHS have excelled in all three areas of singing.  Classically, the choirs have performed three times at Carnegie Hall in New York City, (we opened a concert performance in 2007) Orchestral Hall in Chicago, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D. C. and Disney Hall and Dorothy Chandler Hall in Los Angeles.  The Vocal Jazz Ensemble was chosen as the top high school vocal jazz ensemble in the nation for the year 2005 (Downbeat Award) and as the 1st runner-up in in the nation in 2010 (Downbeat Award).  This ensemble placed first at the Fullerton Jazz Festival (the largest jazz festival in the western U.S.) in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.   The very popular Finalé show (all student produced) performs three nights of fun and contemporary music to enthusiastic crowds.

Vocal ensembles from RHS have traveled to New York (four times), Vancouver, Canada, Chicago, San Francisco (twice) and San Diego to attend national festivals.  All groups (Concert Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers) have consistently earned Superior ratings, Adjudicator's Awards, (96 out of 100 pts or higher) Top Choral Program and Sweepstakes for 14+ years.  Local performances include Disneyland, (Disneyland Candlelight Ceremony-several years), T.O. Civic Arts Center with Dick Van Dyck (several years)  area invitational university festivals in Southern California, (USC, LMU, CSUN, CSUF, Westmont, APU, Biola)  high school/college exchanges as well as community events and concerts.  Whether local or national level, the students gain valuable performance experience, receive feedback/evaluation from regarded adjudicators and gain cultural experiences as they interact with other singers and musicians.

for the 2016-2017 ensembles will begin March 1 and continue through March 24.

Singers should be prepared to sing a song of their choice (any style) in addition to the Star Spangled Banner.  If you are interested in being in Vocal Jazz, email Mrs. Graeve at to set up your audition and get any questions answered.  Auditions will be in room 3-2 at RHS. Remember, singing experience is not required. You can learn as you go! All are welcome!  We look forward to welcoming you into the RHS vocal family.

Welcome to the Graeveyard! (Grooveyard)!
